The road to a college degree can sometimes seem very long. You may find it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You may experience setbacks, disappointments, and hardships that tempt you to quit. I hope to give you some incentive to stay the course and become a student who achieves college success.
When you feel discouraged, remember that a college degree gives you these advantages:
_____1. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a college degree usually means a much higher standard of living.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports the following differences in average salaries and life time earnings based on education:
High School Diploma $33,419 $1.6 million
Bachelors Degree $58,866 $2.6 million
Masters Degree $70,813 $3.0 million
Doctoral Degree $104,214 $4.1 million
Professional Degree $117,033 $4.7 million
Yes, I know that some people do very well for themselves without a college degree, but they are the exception, not the rule. You can also see that college loans, if necessary, can be very good investments. The higher salary you'll earn because of the degree quickly offsets the cost of your education.
_____2. A college degree tends to become more valuable with time.
A college degree is often required for promotions and salary increases. Also, the degree may be what made the job possible in the first place.
_____3. Many rewarding and interesting professions require a college degree.
You can't become a physician, architect, engineer, psychologist, teacher, chemist, physical therapist, or marine biologist without one. You spend so many hours of your life working. For your own quality of life, if at all possible, those hours should be spent doing something you love.
_____4. A college education gives you options and makes it easier to change jobs, and even careers, when necessary.
For many years, I felt kind of silly for all the time and money I spent on earning my masters degree since I ended up primarily home raising children. However, having that masters degree opened up doors for me later that would otherwise have stayed shut. It's what allows me to teach at a community college, a job I love, and also opened the door for me to become an author and instructor with ed2go.
Now that I'm a single mother, and provide the primary support for several children, I am very grateful for my education.
_____5. A college degree gives you a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.
When you earn a college diploma, you know you've accomplished something special. You know the effort it has taken to get there, and it's something you can be proud of for the rest of your life.
_____6. A college degree is a great legacy for your children.
You will probably be much better able to provide for your family with a college degree. Just as importantly, you will be a great example to your children of the value of a good education.
_____7. Going to college develops skills, imparts knowledge, and will enrich your life in countless ways.
It's hard to explain just how much achieving a college education will change you. You'll be challenged in ways that will affect all aspects of your life. You'll meet very interesting people, have many new experiences, and use your mind to learn and analyze information you simply couldn't be exposed to any other way.
One parting thought... I've never met anyone who told me, "I wish I hadn't earned my college degree." So, stay motivated. You can succeed!
